What a day! The perfect prelude to the National Championships in one weeks' time. No fewer than 7 skippers from Burwain turned up to greet a further 6 visitors from as far afield as the South of England, the Midlands and Wales.
After a 10.30am briefing the Northern District Championship and National Travellers Trophy racing was underway.
Gusty winds and B rigs made racing extremely challenging for all with the windward mark causing occasional havoc amongst the entire fleet due to the swirling breezes over the dam wall. Calls of 'Starboard' were frequently premature from skippers who then found they were flipped onto Port before they'd finished their warning.
Dave Fowler (GBR 840) from Kingsmill, past National and European champion, took the day with an unbeatable 8 bullets from 14 races. Tim Long from Abersoch (GBR 999) consistently scored highly enough to take 2nd place away from the next two skippers, both from Burwain RCL, John Sharman (GBR 482 - 3rd) and Hugo Chandor (GBR 455 - 4th).
Battle resumes for many of those present next weekend, 8th and 9th July at West Lancs Sailing Club, when the National Championships will doubtless be hotly contested.
