Burwain, once again, hosted the Northern Area Championship Open Meeting and combined it with Day 2 of their own Winter Series.
The weather did not disappoint. All skippers (9 turned out) expressed surprise at the light breeze on offer at the start of the day; the forecast had predicted winds of 20 - 30mph. A rigs were chosen for warm ups but by the time the first race was started all had changed to B rigs. After less than an hour the winds kicked in causing a scramble for C rigs with some opting for D to avoid the inevitable submarining brought about by having an overpowered boat.
Our two visiting skippers, Eric Austwick and Tony Wilson (Fleetwood MYPBC) enjoyed good results on unfamiliar water. Eric took 4th away from Richard Whittle (Burwain RCL) by 3 points, and Tony finished 3rd after losing out to Hugo Chandor (Burwain RCL) by the smallest of margins - just 1 point!
The days winner was John Sharman (GBR 428) who, after an inconsistent morning that saw him in equal first place, then shook off any challengers and took 4 wins out of the 6 afternoon races to ensure victory.
Special thanks for the day go to Trevor Bell who, yet again, made the journey over from Fleetwood to offer his services as scorer and umpire. Trevor is an invaluable asset to the Area Championship.
